Pneumonia...HAH

Yes, that is right, I have pneumonia. Isn't that spectacular. I was diagnosed by a churchmember physician today after church. He also happened to have a full course of antibiotics at his house, which was fantastic. So, I should feel better in a few days. Unforturnately, that doesn't explain why I have pneumonia in the first place. I had it less than two years ago when I was pregnant with Sidda.
So, back to my week. On Sunday after church in Las Vegas, we headed out for Phoenix, AZ. Got there late Sun night, and stayed until Thursday morning. Had a nice visit with my very good friend, Farrah, and her kids, who I really enjoy. She worked most of the time though, and I didn't have a car available to me. So I didn't do much. Which is really not like me and my kids. But it was hot, 100 degrees hot, and like I said no vehicle. I did do some packing, as Farrah moved this past Sat, and a lot of laundry, as her new place doesn't have a washer and dryer. We had a nice Emergency Preparedness Family Home Evening, which was fun. At any rate, I drove back Thursday. We left at 10am and got into SLO at 8pm. Yuck.
Since then, I still haven't been feeling well, obviously, so I haven't done much. Aunica had a birthday party to attend Saturday morning (a princess party, how could we miss it), and some grocery shopping. Other than that I have been incredibly lazy. :) I feel a bit entitled with my current illness. I wish I knew why I am getting it so often. Must be getting old.

Sick

Yes, that is right, sick. Isn't that fantastic. The night before my birthday, no less. I had a fever, chills, couldn't get warm. The next day was the same, on my birthday, and Aunica got sick, too. It was a nice birthday though. I was a little disappointed that not very many people remembered, even one of my best friends. But she did, eventually, and wrote me one of the nicest cards I have ever received, and gave me some cool camping stuff for my scrapbook. My awesome husband organized dinner at a new Mexican place here in town, Chino's which was perfect, and then we went to the Madonna Inn for cake. Woo-Hoo! Good stuff, even better for breakfast the next day. ;)
Speaking of the next day, things didn't get all that much better! I was headed to Las Vegas for a wedding for a friend from college, taking my MIL instead of my husband, as he had some senior project work to do. We left right on time, 9am, to make the 5pm wedding. After a few stops on my MIL's part, we finally left at about 9:30, and arrived in Las Vegas at 3:45. Plenty of time, right? Well, we stopped at the Marriot, where the wedding was, but my MIL said the hotel was too expensive. So, we drove around looking for another hotel, to the point that when we gave up and went back to the Marriot, it was 4:57. After getting ready, and being directed to the wrong wedding (yes, Andy did get married, I saw it), we missed our intended wedding. We did make the reception, which was interesting. The bride is Mexican, from Mexico, which I didn't expect, as I had never met her, and her last name was Greenough. From a previous marriage, I assume. So half the wedding guests and party didn't speak English. Which is fine. It was a stereotypical Las Vegas wedding, with a blinking neon sign at the sweetheart table, each table themed for a casino (we were at Treasure Island, with TI cards, dice, and a pirate ship centerpiece), and the cake was cards and dice, with a bride dragging the groom cake topper. And that is about it. The food was mediocre, mostly cold. We stayed until ten, when the music became more "gettin down" and the alcohol starting taking effect. So, mind you, this is 10pm in Vegas without a hotel room. No problem, my MIL knows *just* where to go. Sigh. At midnight I finally called La Quinta and got directions and paid ALMOST AS MUCH as I would have at the Marriot. AND I would have been on time to the wedding. AND I would have gotten a full night's sleep. Whatever.
The next morning didn't go much better. Aunica woke up at about 7:30, and I took her downstairs for breakfast (which was a plus). After we headed back to the room, I put the girls in the bath, and Sidda stayed in longer. I had Aunica go in and check on her. Aunica came out of the bathroom and I asked "is your sister okay?" Her answer? "Yes, she is fine...(long pause)...But, mommy, why is there poo-poo in the bath?" NOT FINE! Ahhhh! Into the bathroom to clean up child and bathtub. My mother in law tells me, "I think I broke my wrist last night." Really. Wonderful. In the meantime, I had been looking, unsucessfully, for a church. We are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and are pretty consistent about church attendance. Finally we just got in the car and drove and found one about three blocks away. Attended sacrament meeting, and were going to leave as my 19mo has a runny nose at this point. But my 4yo begged to go to class, and how could I say no to that?!? So I send my MIL to the hospital, and chased Sidda in the halls for 2 hours. Timing worked out great, just as meetings were over my MIL shows back up, and my nephew, too. Yes, she had a broken wrist, but she had broken it in a fall earlier this year, and aggravated it the night before.
Anyway, my husband wants me to get off the computer and spend time with him. What, like he hasn't seen me for a week? I'll pick up on the Arizona part of my week later.

Birthday Week

Well, all the birthday festivities are over for my daughter, and she has sucessfully turned 4! What an exhausting ordeal, I'll tell you. I planned a big party for her Sat, with 20 kids in attendance. It was a camping theme, so I had 4 activity stations: pinecone birdfeeder, rock painting, nature collage, and archeological dig (for small snakes, lizards, bugs). I also set out some outdoor games, and set up a tent with small plastic animals and blocks inside. My husband grilled hot dogs and started up the campfire. After we all ate, I took the kids on a treasure hunt, that my best friend had set up. There were three clues leading down the street, to path and a treasure box. In the box were goodie bags with flashlights, bubbles, and glow bracelets. Back to the house, and we all roasted s'mores (most of the parents stayed), and then had a program. I sang songs, mostly requests from the kids, and read two stories. I only did it for a half an hour, but I bet the kids could have gone on much longer. They were paying attention, singing and having a great time. Then everyone headed home, and I let the birthday girl open some presents. We didn't do presents during the party for a number of reasons. I don't like to encourage my kids to rip through them. I feel like they don't appreciate each gift that way. Also, I don't want the gifts, or my child's reaction, to be compared. That just isn't nice. So, she opened her presents over the next few days. The only bummer during the party was that my 19mo old took a header on the asphalt, and has a nicely bruied and scraped nose.
My MIL stayed with us Sat and Sun night, which was nice. Sun was really busy, as I had to bring snack for nursery and Aunica (my 4yo) had to give her first talk in Primary. I got it all taken care of though, and we had a nice afternoon at home. My husband played video games all afternoon until I was ready to strangle him!
Monday was Aunica's actual birthday, and it was a crazy day. My MIL wanted me to go with her to the mall in Santa Maria so she could get a new pair of glasses at Lens Crafters. Do you have any idea what a BAD idea it is to take a 19mo to a place with 1000 pair of glasses right at her eye level? It was miserable! I can't tell you how many times I yelled at her, and I thought to myself, this is why I don't take my children to places that are not appropriate for their age. Anyway, we got some lunch there, got the glasses, and rushed back to SLO. I am enrolled in a Field Trip class that I thought started at noon, and we didn't get there until 12:45. I was really upset and frustrated, until I realized it actually started at 1pm, and we were early. Toured the Jack House, which is always a favorite of mine, then headed to County Culture to get frozen yogurt. Then went to pick up Aunica's barbie cake from Albertson's, to the fish store so my MIL could buy Aunica some fish for her birthday, then to Franks for dinner, as per Aunica's request. Back to my house (ahead of the birthday girl), and I go to take out the cake and it has completely collapsed. AAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel like crying, but my best friend, Kim, saves the day. She props it back up, and I pull out the can of whipped cream. By the time Aunica got there, it looked good enough to eat, at least. She was thrilled with her new bike, we sang happy birthday, and put her to bed. The End!
My birthday is Friday. So, we'll see what that holds. Probably not much, which is fine with me! Lots of pictures, like I said. :) Hopefully some nice dinner. I would love the Madonna Inn, but I think I'll pick something a little more reasonable.

End of summer

Well, it has been a long summer, and now I am ready for fall. Having fallen off the wagon, I hope to at least check in some. Over the summer, I did a lot of Parent Participation classes through the Adult School with my kids (messy art, gymnastics, gardening, field trip, preschool) and took my kids to swim lessons. Still can't swim, but that is another story. Why do I get so frustrated with my firstborn? Why are my expectations so unrealisitc? Whatever. My best friend's daughter moved out, into her grandmother's house. Went to the park, did a little camping, not much travelling. Until this past week, and the four of us went to Mono Lake area to camp for a week. It was fabulous! We went to Bodie, Mono Lake, Mammoth, and in between. It was actually tent camping this week, and I have never camped for so many nights. It was great, so relaxing, and nice to let the kids just be kids. Came back with renewed energy and ideas that quickly disappated when reality shone it's sunny face. Ah, well, such is life.
This upcoming Monday is my daughter's 4th birthday. Crazy! She is having a real birthday party this weekend, with friends. It will be a camping theme, but not overnight. We are setting up a tent in the front yard, a fire pit (I'm sure my snobby neighbors will love me), and some camping activities. I am really looking forward to it, and so is she. We also started Parent Participation classes this week, which need more enrollment to go on, hopefully people get on the bandwagon! Field Trip, messy art, gymnastics, two preschool classes, and gardening. My oldest also has dance on Fridays. Tomorrow, and I need to bring snack to class, and locate all of my daughter's things...Yuck! Always something.
Not much else new TTC, for all those familiar with the baby lingo. Just this month, so we'll see.
Planning my husband's graduation in 3 months! Woo-Hoo! I am so excited, just to have him finish!
It's my birthday next week, too. :) My birthday present from my husband? All the film I have been saving up over the summer, developed! It will be a great present, and I am totally looking forward to it.

A beautiful day in May

So beautiful, I feel like writing poetry? Whatever. It is gorgeous, a day that should make me feel that summer is soon upon us, but given all the recent events in my life, I can't think past this weekend. Which is a problem, because I should be planning a baby shower for next weekend, and I just now decided on invitations. *Sigh* I want to get them done before tomorrow?!? Whatever.
So, about three (four?) weeks ago one of my best friends got a DUI. She has a 10 year old, and I talked to her a few days later, and she (the mom) decided she just couldn't do it all, and she was sending her daughter to go live with her mom. I said, no, send her to us. Her mom isn't that much more stable than she is. So, in less than a week, she came to live with us. We moved her schools, set up her room, etc. I don't know how long she will be with us, but her mom is renting out her room, so I expect it will not be a short amount of time. A year, at least.
Parenting a 10 year old is a lot different than my two little ones! Ipods, razerphones, homework, pick-ups, drop-offs, school lunches, teacher appreciation day, walk-a-thon, and the list goes on and on. And it has only been three weeks! She is an easy kid, but it is different.
Everybody's reactions have been entertaining, also. A lot of "oh, what a wonderful thing for you to do," which I don't think is accurate. We have been close to her since she was little, of course we want her here. Some cracks about having a live-in babysitter. Lots of questions.
She is over at a friend's house tonight. She sees her mom Thursday evenings and Sunday all day. She is pretty much gone all weekend, at her grandmother's, and with us for the school week.
Well, that is what is new in my life. I'll check back in later.

Sigh...

Oh, what a day! I started off by trying to wrap up Girl Scout cookies sales, which culminated in me panicing because I believed I had lost $500. Stress, tears, frantic searching. Took care of all the other paperwork and delivering of other monies. Came home, rechecked my figures, and I actually have $200 too much (which I can actually explain). Feeling too relieved to feel ridiculous, take a break.
I am currently listening to General Conference. I couldn't get it to work earlier, but I can now. Whatever. The kids are in bed, my husband is working on his new legos set he got for his birthday. Tomorrow, more conference, hanging out with some friends for 2nd session. I also received a new calling, as nursery leader. Beginning next Sunday. I would say nursery is not my favorite, but it is okay, and I'll bring my one year old.
Also, I got a phone call today on our rental, a couple that we have been corresponding with had a change in their living arrangements, and wanted to move in today. Ahh! Get out the bleach, get on my knees, etc. They are here now, hopefully settling in.
We had a great week last week, we went camping (well, in a cabin, SOME people say that doesn't count) in Manchester Beach, Ca near Mendocino. It was great! It was the four of my family plus my mother in law. The only thing I didn't take into consideration was that it is very much on HWY 1, and very windy. So, it took forever to get anywhere and we all felt sick by the time we got there. We did spend a day up at the Avenue of the Giants, a redwood forest in Humbolt County. Over the week we celebrated my husband's birthday, checked out a lighthouse, different beaches, flew a kite, went to the redwoods, glass beach, geocached, and Mendocino, including seeing whale spouts. It was cold and rainy for some of the time, which is why we chose to rent the cabin, but we were able to get out and enjoy every day. My sister and her husband came up from SF, and it was great to spend the time with them. They are headed to Brazil end of April for four months, and we will miss them! We won't see them again before they leave. Anyway, it was a much needed vacation.
Now we are home, and the house is even more trashed than usual. I have been trying! We have been working hard on the front yard, and it looks so much nicer. It is level now, and my MIL bought my husband a tree for his birthday, and it is planted. We are putting in a walkway, and it is all laid out. It isn't all landscaped yet (no sod, etc.), but you can see the plan coming together.
Another big thing going on is that adult school classes started this week, and I was approved, on scholarship, to take 7! Raising a reader, gardening, two parent-child classes (one with each of my kids), gymnastics, Spanish, and messy art. I haven't decided if this is really what I want to do. It may be too much for my girls and our schedule. But I can't decide what to give up! They are all so fun! I have attended all except the raising a reader and gardening. I will probably miss the raising a reader again Monday, because I have a dentist appt, for which I still haven't found a sitter. Sigh.
I can't think of anything else. I am trying to listen to conference, so I can't devote that much attention to this. I'll write again, hopefully soon.

A Rainy Day

What strange weather we have been having. I haven't seen the global warming movie, but our area is apparently not the warming type. We have had some serious cold, but now we are having some warm rain. My girls have been sick, high fevers and colds. Now they are better, but we're all going stir crazy from being inside so long. It is my youngest's first birthday on the 15th, and we are having her birthday party this Sat. since my best friend is in town from NYC. Of course, I haven't planned it yet, so I'd better get on it. I just decided on the time tonight. I am hosting another friend's birthday party at my house tomorrow night. Life is busy, as always. Today I had parent participation class with my 3yo, and gymnastics, which only my 3yo is enrolled in, but my small one enjoys even more. Thurs is a slower day for me, and I'll have to put some time into house cleaning.
So, my husband got all that straightened out with school. He is in an independent study class now, which is especially nice because he can structure his time so that he doesn't have to work on Saturdays. Yay!
I was reading through my last post, and I had to laugh, as I described my 3yo as "capable." She told her dad the other night that he was "capable" of buying her something. Thank goodness I like the things she is learning from me, humorous as it may be. The small ones do say the funnies things. I will have to keep posting them. I love them. I love the sweet way she says certain things, like "mazagine" for magazine. I have to keep reminding myself of all these wonderful things, so I don't give in to the often overwhelming urge to string her up by her toes. :)

Cal Poly Sucks

So, can I say that? I graduated from there, and my husband hopes to graduate from there. Some day. It should be this December, but maybe not. He had a serious run-in with a professor today. My very non-confrontative husband. A little tactless, maybe. Okay, definitely. Anyway, basically this professor said that my husband has "slipped through the cracks" to have gotten to where he is. My A and B student husband. Thats right, all those other professors for the last four years were awarding him above standard grades when he didn't even deserve to pass. I don't think so. AND he told him that because he doesn't stay all night and work on his projects he has a poor work ethic. Somebody didn't tell this guy that work ethic involves working during the time you are expected to work, not staying all night because you screwed around during your work time. So, apparently, all those employers are looking for people to pay overtime and DOUBLE time all night long instead of efficient, hard working employees who get their work done in a reasonable amount of time. I see. Maybe my husband isn't ready for the real world. OH! Thats right, he is in the real world! He has a real job, where he goes to work and works hard all day. Where his boss gives him $600 bonuses for his work ethic. So, his teacher has threatened to fail him (mind you this is week three, and only one assignment turned in). Which would put his graduation back 6 months.
So, tomorrow my husband will go in and beg another teacher to take him on for this quarter. I don't believe there is any way he will get a fair grade from this instructor. And have a little chit-chat with the dean (at his professor's request, who has already gone to speak with him). I wish I could go in for him. I am much more the outspoken one.
Anyway. I have a cold, which sucks, if you ask me. Not a bad one, but one all the same. I had a nice walk today with a couple of girlfriends, to Jamba Juice. It was a beautiful day. My 11 mo old is up and around, walking. My 3 yo is defiant. That is all I can say about her right now. Well, I guess I shouldn't be so negative. She is sweet, funny, capable, and helpful (when she wants to be). She is loving, cuddly and engaging. But, man, can she ever be a pill. As only three can, I suppose.
Well, I'm off to bed. I sure hope tomorrow works out. We have a lot riding on it.

Tomorrow?

Time flies so quickly that tomorrow is always about a month away. That somehow thirty days fits into what I feel should be only one day.
So, basically my SIL told me that she doesn't like me. That I am two faced and insincere. That everything my husband has done wrong in the last seven years is my fault. It really made me upset. I knew she and I weren't friends, but I didn't realize that she straight doesn't like me, never has, and really doesn't know me. That I wouldn't like me, either, if I was the person she thinks I am. And how do I change that? Any time I am nice she thinks I am being insincere. It is quite paralyzing.
So, I talked to a member of our Bishopric, and got some good advice. We have been back up to their house a few times, and it has gone fine. I'm sure I will never feel the same, but I am thankful to have been able to find the courage to persevere, and attempt to continue the relationship. Relationships with my husband's family have never been easy.
What else is new? Both my girls are back in Parent Participation class. I am reading the Da Vinci Code (again). Gymnastics, switching off with other parents for childcare. Trying to stay healthy in cold and flu season. I am having some meloncholy lately. I have had that classic feeling that I am boring. That when I call people, mostly my husband, all I have to talk about are dishes and the color of poop, etc. I don't know what to do about it. I am happy being a stay-at-home mother, I certainly don't want to go back to work, but I want to be interesting. Speaking of work, the new quarter does bring me work. I am back at a local elementary school providing childcare for an ESL class. All my kids from last quarter are gone, and I have a 14mo old, a 2 1/2 yr old, 5 yr old and a 10 yr old. Much more crazy. My husband is building a fence, talking about what to do after he graduates. It may mean a move for us, if only temporarily. We'll see. He graduates next December. I have made a promise to my Uncle to have the house in order by then. It is a tall order.
My best friend is coming out for a week. Her sister is getting married. I am really looking forward to seeing her, as always. It is also a motivator to getting the house cleaned some. Plan my youngest's first birthday party.
Well, I have a Girl Scout activity in 30 minutes, so I'd better go. We are doing some work at the Dallidet Adobe as a service project.
Hopefully less days will disappear before I manage to get back on...:)

After Christmas Blues...

Well, I'm not sure that title really applies. I did have a very nice evening. My family went to the drive-in and saw Night at the Museum, which was cute. Our days stretch out before me with considerably less going on than pre-Christmas. Which is definately a plus.
Christmas was nice. We spent the weekend before Christmas in SF with my family, in from Singapore. My husband gave me an early Xmas present: a GPS. I was so excited! Not because I can find my way when I get lost (which I am *notorious for doing), but because I have been wanting to get into geocaching. It is like a grown-up treasure hunt; check out www.geocaching.com. So, we went on a hunt in SF with my family, and we found it. It was harder than I thought it would be! Really fun though, and on Christmas my family went caching and found another one. My 3yo is into the treasure part of it. :) But anyway, I had a good time hanging out with the family. Spent some time with my two 20yo cousins, stayed at an apartment my father is renting, saw the Pickle Family Circus, saw the lights on Union Square. Saw some old FOF, and some other distant cousins. But, were glad, as always, to come home.
Christmas Eve, like I mentioned. Spent part of it with one of my BIL, and the other part with the another BIL. Both were very nice. At the second BIL's house we had an unexpected, very nicely done dinner, and a Christmas program. Very fancy. My third BIL was there also, which made me uncomfortable, but we stayed. I'm not sure if I regret that now or not.
Anyway, Christmas we spent at home. Opening presents, slowly. I made a nice breakfast, went geocaching, my MIL came over, made a nice dinner. I didn't want to rush my kids through their presents, so we were still opening them at 10pm. We would open one, then she would play with it for a while before wanting to open another one. My MIL spent the night, and I didn't go to bed until 2am, my husband at 3am (playing with his new Batman lego car, well, building it acutually).
The next day we headed back up to my BIL's house so my husband could play with their new Xbox 360 and play basketball with them. So, my SIL and I stayed at the house, and we got into quite a discussion.
Which is what is getting me down. And it is late, so I'd better sign off and write about it tomorrow. To be continued...

December...

So, it is December again, and all the chaos that comes with it. I always think it won't be that bad, I always do my Christmas shopping in November to "ensure" that it won't be too hectic, I always fail. There is just so much fun stuff to do in December! So many activities, so much family around, etc. It seems every single day I have something going on. Not that unusual. I guess the difference is that my busyness seems to fall in the evening instead of the daytime. Tonight is Friday, I think we have decided to do...nothing. In the past week we have been in the SLO Downtown Parade(F), picked out our Christmas tree(Sa), had a late Thanksgiving dinner at our house(Su), had family over(M), had two girl scout meetings(T), had a Pampered Chef Party(W), and had people over for dinner(Th). We rented a few movies, including Dora, and it is rainy, so I think we'll just stay home. :) We'll see about tomorrow.

Funeral, holiday

Well, I can't say I am great about getting posts in all the time. I guess I do it often enough, I just have so much going on that I can't seem to get it all down.
So, the funeral. It was sad, as funerals are. All the family, which means exponential chaos. More hurt feelings. Lots of tears. I brought my own two babysitters for my own two kids. You would think I did that because my kids were uncontrollable, but it was more for their basic protection. One of my nieces can be quite physically abusive. So, the extra adults were very much in need (our church furnished 2 adults as well). Also I did not want my kids being released to anyone other than myself or my husband, and I wanted someone there I could trust to respect that. One of my husband's brothers is a convicted child molester, and we have not had any contact with him for the past three years. Our children had never seen him, but the rest of my husband's family doesn't feel the same way. Of course, I knew he would be there, but it was important to my husband that our girls go. So, fine, they went, and I had extra eyes to watch them.
My father in law was truly a great man. He was a teacher, spiritual and intelligent. I enjoyed him very much. Everyone had such nice (and different) things to say about him. We will all miss him dearly.
The funeral wrapped up, and we headed back to the church for some food. Then home. Everyone else went to another brother's house, but I had enough of being nice for one day.
Thursday rolled around, Thanksgiving, and we spent it at my BIL's house. It was nice. All my husband's siblings were there, but the one we steer clear of wasn't there much, which was good. I am afraid of becoming lax in our standing on not associating with him. When we got there I was in a funk, kind of crabby and antisocial. Mainly because my husband is always left out of his family, and it bothers me. They don't invite him to join in their activites, etc. Getting an invitation to their house is like pulling teeth. Right before dinner, I snapped at my SIL, and I knew I was out of line. Apologized, and pulled myself out of my mood. Then things were better. We all went to go see movies, though not all at the same time. Not my favorite Thanksgiving tradition. I like games better. I also have the tradition of passing around a journal and everyone writing what they are thankful for in it. It was beautiful to read. Many things are cleared and sweeter on paper. I had felt all day that nobody was talking about my FIL, and I thought that was weird, but all the enties talk about him. Also the thankfulness for each other, and the admission of weakness, etc was so nice to read. The things that aren't always said, but should be. We didn't head home until 11pm, but it was good.
Friday my husband installed sinks. Whatever. Saturday we cleaned the garage, which was *very* exciting. Except all the extra ended up in the driveway. And that evening it started to rain. SOOO, at 9pm I got out there and threw all the stuff back under the eaves. I am offering most of it on freecycle.org, and it is already leaving. Very nice. Especially because my neighbors *will* complain. They suck.
Sunday was pretty quiet. I subbed in nursery. Always a treat. Today is Monday, and we are all back to the grind. I have a bunch of stuff hanging over my head that I just haven't taken care of with all the things going on in Nov. Now the time is short, and I need to get on it. Almost all my Christmas shopping is finished though. :) I have a policy, so to speak, of trying to get all my Xmas shopping done in Nov, so my Dec is less hectic. It is usually very nice, and this time especially so. Dec is already filling up. Today a good friend of mine was sick, so I took her some food, then later some dinner. Then we went to the drive-in to see Deck the Halls. It was cute. Tomorrow evening I am planning on giving blood. I'd better remember to drink lots of water throughout the day. When I gave birth to my first child, I hemorraged, and needed 4 units of blood. I made a pact with myself to give it all back, but I only managed to do one before I became pregnant again. Although I am still breastfeeding, I feel up to it, so I'm going to try. Otherwise I think I will run into the same problem. I like breastfeeding to 18mo, and my husband and I like this spacing between our kids, so I probably won't have much time in between. Which is fine.
But, I can't believe I am halfway done having children. I often times look at my kids and wonder how I got to this point in my life. I am *very* happy, just sometimes a little bewildered at where the time has gone. And desperate to enjoy every day, as they slip away so quickly.
Well, if I'm really good I'll post again tomorrow (or later today, as it were). I'm off to bed. Goodnight!

The morning of

7:35am the day of the funeral. I am not usually up this early, but I couldn't sleep. So is my 3yo, but she is up from coughing. Both my girls have had runny noses, but it seems to be deteriorating instead of getting better. Unfortunately. But, today is the funeral, and at my husband's request they are attending. I stayed up too late last night, too. I'll be glad when this day is over. I'll probably be even more glad when Thanksgiving is over. My husband is taking off Th, Fr, Sat and Sun, so we'll have some nice, quiet time together. Now what to do? Recover and lick wounds from Thurs, is my guess. Start a fire in the fireplace, drink hot cocoa, play some Christmas music. Well, at least I have something to look forward to.

Hurt Feelings...

So, I just got off the phone with my MIL, and my feelings are really hurt. I was asked at the family meeting last Monday to write the eulogy, and I have been thinking about it, getting prepared. Well, I just called her to get Dad's specific dates, where he had lived, etc, and she said, oh, there were a bunch of the kids over at my brother in law's house last night, and they wrote it. I can just go ahead and forward my stuff on to him. Of course, she acted like this should be fine with me, no explanation necessary. Just that I hadn't done it, so he did. I am feeling really left out. I know he wasn't my father, and I really just offered to write the eulogy because I wanted to be nice and not make any of them do it. I don't mind not doing it, but not being told, and not being included in all the memories last night made me sad. I know this is probably overreacting, and it is an emotional week, but I can't make myself feel otherwise. Well, I'm feeling a little better already. His family just sucks, and I know it, and there is nothing else to do but get over it. So, I guess I will. Preferably before tomorrow morning's funeral.
My best friend is coming to town in about 30 minutes. But, she, in that way that best friends can be, has a tendency to react even stronger to things that hurt me than I do. So, I want to tell her, but I know it will just make me upset again. *sigh* And she is already upset, because her family is crazy and dysfunctional, too! Why do we even have families?!? So we can screw each other up even more?!? Whatever.

On Death, and other things

So, it has been a while. Just the way things go, I suppose. My father in law passed away this previous Tuesday. He had been in ICU for two months. He went in with severe abdominal pain, which turned out to be a number of clots blocking the flow of blood to his liver. They performed emergency surgery, and it was touch and go for a while, with organ failure, but he did recover. All except for his lungs. He was 75 years old with chronic brochitis, and with his history of poor lung health, he just wasn't able to get off the respirator. The hospital tried to wean him off, and they were planning what rehabilitation facility to send him to. Until this past weekend, when the doctor leveled with my mother in law and told her that he would never live off life support again. In his will it very clearly states that he doesn't want to be on life support for more than 30 days, so the decision was easy. We held a family meeting on Monday to discuss the process and funeral arrangements, which was nice. Sad, but good to get everybody together and air all the feelings. I felt like we had a lot of the same feelings and thoughts. Arrangements were made to take dad off life support at 8pm the next day. Everybody else went to say their goodbyes right then, but I had to get back to my nursing infant. My family went the next day, and dad had been taken off most of his pain medication, so he could hear us. My 3yo sang him a song, and we all told him we loved him.
That evening I left my girls at home with a friend, and headed to the hospital, arriving at 7:30. My husband and his brother gave dad a blessing of release. Promptly at 8pm the Dr. came in to start the process. All of my husband's living brothers and sisters and their available spouses were in attendance. They took dad off the respirator slowly, so he wouldn't be struggling on in pain. That took an hour, and he was the same as he had been, sometimes grimacing, sometimes sleeping. Then, at about 9, they took him off the machines entirely. He opened his eyes wide, and seemed to be looking at something that wasn't there. I am a faithful church member, and I truly believe his spirit was preparing itself to pass on. Whether that was angels ministering to him, places his spirit had to visit, I don't know, but it was a very spiritual hour. Earlier in the day he had been unable to open his eyes, although he tried. Now he was focused and looking around, though not at anything in the room. His breathing became rapid and his pulse raced, as though he was running a marathon. At about 10pm, all that changed. His color left his face, he totally relaxed, and his breathing slowed to once every 20-30 seconds. I got the impression that his spirit had left at that point, and so did my husband. That it was just the mechanical part of his brain kicking his breathing reflex. After 10 minutes, he died. It was a beautiful and terrible thing to be there for, and I am so grateful I was present. I feel even more strongly now that the spirit continues on after the body dies. That our bodies are created by a Heavenly Father, and they are made to do what they do, even die. It was peaceful and very obviously a process. Right after he died, I was struck with the idea that all dead bodies look alike. That seemed a bit strange, but I think void of a spirit, they all take on a similar look. We were all able to stay for another 45 minutes, just being family, and end with a family prayer before we all went our separate ways. I thought the process would be really hard on my, as I have issues with death, but I didn't. I realize I don't have issues with death as much as I have issues with people being gone...
The funeral is scheduled for Tuesday. My husband will be helping dress his father at some point, and I have offered to write the eulogy. We'll see how that all comes together. We are planning a family Thanksgiving, which will also be interesting. I have a lot to say about that, but I don't want to right now. I also want to write about other events that have occured in the past two weeks (girl scout cookie sales, a girl scout camping trip, etc), but again, not right now.
I am tired of having to recount the story. Maybe I'll just direct people here. I know everybody is loving me, but the process of telling people about it is emotionally draining. Asking if we are okay, asking if it was expected, asking if my MIL is okay, asking if there is anything they can do. I really appreciate everyone's concern, but even having to answer questions about it is hard. Not because I fall apart, but it just makes me tired. I don't know.
Anyway, I am tired of writing about it, too. I'll write more later.

My week

Why is it that I feel like I just posted yesterday, and it has been a week? Why does my life run like this ? Do other people have this problem. Like somehow my life is running on fast forward?
Anyway, this week was nice. Halloween was fun. We had three other couples and a single friend over for a nice dinner-appetizers(spinach dip with french bread and apple slices with a carmel dip), caesar salad, stuffed butternut squash, and homemade ice cream (which I cannot take credit for). The meal didn't go over that hot, in my opinion. Not because it wasn't cooked correctly, or tasted poorly, either. I think it was just a little too gourmet or vegetable heavy for the crowd. I added sausage to the squash! Oh, well. I enjoyed it. My older daugter had a friend over, and they went trick-or-treating in our neighborhood. It was a nice night.
Friday I sold girl scout cookies in front of Blockbuster. I am a leader of a Junior GS troop, mainly ten year olds, two of whom are my nieces. I have a great time doing it. I guess my favorite part is participating in activites that I would usually not get an opportunity to, like touring a cemetary, walking in the SLO Christmas parade (which I am currenly organizing for all SLO girl scouts), etc. The sales are probably not my favorite part, but since I am not the cookie chair this fall (I will be in the spring, my SIL and I switch off) it is a little less pressure.
Saturday got exciting! On Monday when my nephew and his girlfriend were over, we decided on a November 25 (now Nov 24) wedding date, thinking this Saturday was too soon. Well, good thing! They have two older children, ages 3 and just 2, and we offered to keep them while the rest of the family was in the hospital. Friday night at 11pm the kids were dropped off, but it turned out to be a false alarm, and they were picked up about an hour later. Then Saturday at 11am they were dropped off again. They stayed at our house all day, and we took them to the drive-in that night, but before the movie even started we got the phone call. :) They had the baby at 6:06pm, another girl. Their oldest is a boy and the younger (two now) girls. My nephew picked up the kids for a short visit to see their new baby sister, and dropped them back off when the movie was over to spend the night.
Moving on to Sunday, those kids sleep through the night fine, but were up at 6:15. Now, I have to tell you, anything before 7am in our house is the "middle of the night." That is what I tell my kids, and I mean it. Not generally a problem in our home, as my girls usually get up between 8 and 9. Not these kids. So, I got up, and got everybody fed and bathed. We attend church, so I got the kids ready in case they were coming with us. They ended up going to the hospital, and returning that night. Meanwhile, we headed to a friend's house for dinner. Actually, the same group that was at my house for Halloween. Except they did Costco frozen pizza. Which was good, and watched the worst of American Idol, which was not so good. We are not TV people. We don't have cable. We do watch movies, but no R rated and no PG-13 in front of my 3yo. Anyway, it was turned off quickly enough, which was good because it was in danger of driving away ourselves and another couple. We ended up playing scattergories, which was fun, and coming home at 6. Early still. But we watched a movie and had some issues getting my 3yo to sleep, so it was midnight before I hit the sack. And, of course, no rest for the weary as my great niece and nephew were up at 5:50 this am. I was quite a grump. I love them, and was happy to be able to help their family out, but I was not sorry to see them go this morning. I think our family just needs some quiet time. I have had enough of other people's kids for a while. And boys! My goodness! I am thankful for my girls.
So, we had a pretty relaxing day today, after those kids left, and my friends daughter went home (that Monday thing). We all took a nap, actually. And had a nice crock pot meal, and went out for ice cream. Now my husband is putting one kid to bed, and I am about to do the other since she is crying at my feet. Then we'll talk about how we will vote tomorrow. I should post that. THAT would get some responses, I'm sure. I'll think about it...;)

Quick entry

So, my husband and I went to a marriage workshop tonight put on by our church, and the quote of the night, as stated by him was "so, anything will set my wife off..." Everyone laughed, including myself. You have to have a sense of humor, and he really didn't mean it like it sounds. He doesn't always have a way with words, but he means well. Maybe giving advice on marriage isn't his strong point.
Tomorrow is another day. I have another 3 year old over every Monday. Her mother and I switch off so I can take my infant to mommy and me class. My nephew and his girlfriend are also coming over. Hopefully to talk about wedding plans. They are expecting their third child this Thursday, and would like to get married before he or she arrives. Watch me pull a rabbit out of a hat! I am quite a planner, and would like to get that whole getting married thing out of the way for them (like I said, they are on baby #3), so my job is to convince them that I can put together a nice, intimate, beautiful, memorable event in 6 days. No problem! Then in the evening we are having my husband's brother's family over for dinner and pumpkin carving. Always something to look forward to. But I got all the dishes done today, which has been a long time coming. It has been one of those weeks (or longer!) where I do a lot of dishes every day but never seem to finish them. Which feels like a lot of work without a lot of payoff. But, tomorrow is another day, a new start and all that. So, off I go to plan some enriching activities for those girls to keep them out of trouble tomorrow (more about that later). I bid you goodnight.

Halloween Forever

I love this time of year, but I must say that it seems to me that Halloween is a month-long event. I can't tell you how many times we visit the pumpkin patch, trick-or-treat, and get use out of those adorable costumes (thankfully, since they aren't that cheap). I go through more film in the month of October, I swear. The price of having cute kids, I suppose.;) My older daughter is the Statue of Liberty (we took a trip to NYC recently and she is a bit infatuated as only the very small can be...how many times can you watch the same episode of Dora the Explorer?) and also Tinkerbell, courtesey of a friend of ours from church, which suits my girly girl just fine. My younger daughter is a flower. She was also a pony the other day, leftover from her older sister. I ordered her a Holly Hobbie costume online for her, but when it arrived I realized it was *outrageously* large, like it would fit her 3 year old sister, so I decided to shelve it. Costumes, costumes everywhere. At least now that I have kids I don't feel so obligated to dress up myself. Who would be looking at me anyway?!?
Halloween will culminate for us on Tuesday night, of course, with a dinner party at my house for 8 adults and 4 children, including my family. We will also be handing out candy and doing a little trick-or-treating ourselves. We generally receive 100-200 trick or treaters in our neighborhood, so it will be nice to have the additional guests to help pass out, although I think my older daughter is getting old enough to enjoy it as well. I have been looking online for recipe ideas, but I just can't find anything that really catches my eye. I need an entire menu plan. I really enjoy cooking, but all the female guests I have invited are, coincidentally, pregnant, and I can't imagine they would be able to eat eyeball spaghetti, or severed hand chicken. I don't know. I'll have to work on that.
So, today is Sunday, and we changed our clocks back last night. Which, of course, meant we were all up at quarter to seven. Whatever. now we are all ready with hours to spare, which is a nice change. I have hymns on the radio, and my husband is chasing my kids around trying to get them dressed. Sundays are his days to deal with all the kid chores, and I just get to enjoy them. Since I stay at home with them, I find that more than wanting a break from *them*, I want a break from their constant needs. Feeding, dressing, changing, pottying, nursing, then do it all over again. We generally keep a busy schedule during the week (this is no small understatment, it is a whopper, let me tell you), and we don't do anything Sundays, other than go to church.
To update on what is new with my girls, my youngest is pulling up on all the furniture this week (she is 8mo). Not much new with my older daughter. She can recognize all her letters, spell a few simple words, including her own name, count to 20 and count items, although not that many. In terms of personality, my oldest is really intense, active and a chatterbox. My younger daughter is easygoing and happy, loves to clap and wave and smile. Engaging would be a good way to describe her.
Anyway, I have to go put some dinner together before we head out. Catch you later...

FIrst Post...

Just to drop a line...
Just decided to start this blog. I am a mother of two, in San Luis Obispo, California. My girls are 3 years old and 7 months old. My days are busy, and I would like to keep a journal, but I think this one may be easier (now that we have wi-fi and I can access the internet from my living room). I only have about 20 minutes left on my battery though, after playing around and setting up this blog. So, I'll check in later...
